Jan Wagstaff

Jan died on 6th June, 2007. She was a true Londoner, born within earshot of Bow Bells. She came from a theatrical family and started dancing at the age of three, going on to study acting at the London Academy of Dramatic Art. She started her career in Rep but was seduced by Musical Theatre and ascended from the chorus to play the lead parts in many musicals. The part of Rose in 'Gypsy' remained her lifelong favourite.

Discovering a penchant for directing, Jan amassed a portfolio of over 70 shows for both professional and amateur companies, the last to benefit from her experience being Seaford Musical Theatre with whom she produced some of their best shows including 'Fiddler on the Roof' in 2006 and her final show 'Oklahoma' in 2007. It was during rehearsals for the latter that Jan was diagnosed with the cancer which so tragically ended her life.

During her lifetime, Jan introduced hundreds of people to the stage. She had an uncanny ability to spot talent in people who might otherwise never have stepped onto a stage. She was adept at building a show around the strengths of her leading performers and was an imaginative and original director. Jan could lift a room when she walked in and would encourage actors, actresses and dancers way beyond their normal limitations.

Jan showed incredible courage to the end, eschewed self-pity and enthused fellow residents at St Wilfrid's Hospice with her vitality. She said she felt privileged to have been able to achieve everything she wanted to with her life.

Jan juggled family and theatrical life adeptly. Her 'soul-mate' and husband for over 30 years, John, died in 2000. 'London Town' was compiled by Jan for John shortly before his death as he loved London songs and Music Hall in general. The show was originally presented by Peacehaven Players with Jan herself singing the solo 'As Long As He Needs Me'. It had been decided that it would be reprised at Seaford in 2007 with Jan as Director and Choreographer. When it was realised this would not be possible, the Society asked permission to go ahead with the show. It was a fitting tribute to Jan and everything she had done for the Society.
